The Historic Paramount Theatre restoration project is
truly a matter Of Paramount Importance and we need your support!
The stone spire at the top of the building
has been restored. The spire was knocked down by lightening on
Halloween night in 1945 and was removed for safety's sake. A grant
was recently received from the Minnesota Historical Society that in
conjunction with a donation from Virginia Pleas Wilder and other yet
unnamed donors that allowed
us to complete the spire replacement in July of 2007.
The next step
in the restoration project is to finish the neon lighting.
Currently the neon lighting only illuminates the front stage
area of the paramount sky . Originally the neon continued
down the whole length of the theatre adding to the illusion
of space so important to the atmosphere in our Spanish
garden.
The next phase will be building
our restricted fund to ensure the sustainability of the Historic
Paramount Theatre. A restricted fund was formed at the
Paramount Theatre in 2001 and it has continued to grow over the past
few years, but still is only a very small percentage of the total
needed. Interest earnings of this fund are used to
support operating expenses. The cost of running and maintaining this
beautiful theatre greatly exceeds income from ticket sales. Completing
the restoration is only the first part of having a viable theatre in downtown
Austin.
Once we
attain the restricted fund goal, we look to expand the
stage area, add dressing rooms, and a set building shop.
